Alright everything went super smooth except for one problem, when the console is initially booting and scrolling all of which it enjoys scrolling on bootup, the text scrolls beyond my screen and I can't see what's going on with the latest 5 lines or so, like after the initial HD install and it asks you to set a new root password, I couldn't see ANY of that text so I didn't know what was going on, I figured the computer froze until I hit 'return' a bunch of times and got the screen to yell at me and scroll more text and I was able to get the stuff into my screen.

Anyone know what's up?

Maybe your laptop screen is too small.

Try booting with this command:

fb640x680

or

fb800x600

Also you could try:

dsl vga=normal
