rimas search the forum for 'mydsl' that's the answer to your second question.
as for the "look and feel" you can customize dsl like any other GNUlinux system, as far as I know. I've translated the menu, (at each and every release that I use) I changed the wallpaper, created shortcut icons, used a different set of icons and so on.. I've got a persistant /opt directory from which I can load some programs I don't use very often, and I've got some .dsl programs to load at startup, because i need them everytime I use boot up (like abiword, or gimp, i.e.) the only limit is your imagination. have fun
