(Old-time Linux CLI user attempting to get back into it after seven years so please type slowly.)

I've gotten a little comfortable running DSL from a LiveCD using the boot options 'dsl 2' to avoid all the GUI stuff.

I went ahead and did a frugal-grub install putting everything into a single partition.  Now, when I boot from grub, it starts up without stopping to ask 'boot:'.

I see from another message that 'e' allows you to edit boot option from grub and I will try that tonight.  Is there any way to permanently set my preferred boot options?

/cdrom/boot/grub/menu.lst (or something very close...might be /cdrom/grub/menu.lst?).  /cdrom is the partition on which DSL is installed (if not using toram, i think), so if DSL on hda1 then the file is also found at /mnt/hda1/boot/grub/menu.lst.
