Now I can use DSL on a console not with X

I want to used DSL on a Laptop P300 Mhz 128 Mo Ram
(toshiba portege 3110CT)
I have no CD device and no 3"1/2 on my laptop

First: I have putting hda1 on a PC desktop and do a HD installation.
And all is Ok.
I use grub with  DSL fb800x600

After: I have putting hda1 on my laptop.
X dont work, now i use runlevel 2
# startx don't work
xsetup.sh don't resolved
There are some log messages from xinit in the console, but there are not true.
/usr/X11R6/bin is on the PATH of root and the file /root/.xinitrc existe

How can I configured xfree86?

Thanks for your help

This doesn't look right. As I understand it, you should not precede fb* with "dsl"

If X doesn't work in runlevel 5, it won't work in runlevel 2 either. On top of this, running as root (especially X) is considered a bad thing for normal daily use.  I'd go back to runlevel 5 and deal with the original problem (perhaps fixed by fixing the fb boot option)

"DSL fb800x600" is the title of an entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst

Yes I do
 id:5:initdefault
 and whit grub
   kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda1 quiet vga=789 noacpi noapm
   nodma frugal
And my laptop crash!

Now for debugging I use this /boot/grub/menu.lst line for grub
kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda1 quiet vga=789 noacpi noapm
nodma frugal 2 base noresttore

And I'm root for debugging.

? It isn't a grub trouble,
I want to use a Xfbdev xserver and I read Xvesa in a # ps
command, during a sdsl@box:/$ startx command.

More precisely:
xinit /home/dsl/.xinitrc -- /home/dsl/.xserverrc
/usr/bin/W11/Xvesa -mouse /dev/psaux,5 -screen 800x600x24 -shadow
-nolist
( 800x600x24 is vga=789  )

I try an other installation, with a dsl embedded and qemu on a
win98se boot.

Thanks.

Yes, and as I said you should not precede "fb800x600" with "dsl".  It should be just "fb800x600". Putting it after "dsl" apparently causes the framebuffer option to fail.
On top of this you also use vga=789.  This looks like another conflict with the framebuffer option (just guessing here, though).  Xfbdev is not the same as a framebuffer console, so my guess is that you should remove fb800x600 unless you have a laptop that requires it.

Have you tried running xsetup after booting to the console?  maybe you can configure a working X with that and then save your .xserverrc for future sessions.

Just a few words.

I have just re-install DSL from a boot CD on the portege HD on my testing PC
and All is OK.
It's a very quick installation.

dsl@box:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor       : 0
vendor_id       : AuthenticAMD
cpu family      : 6
model           : 8
model name      : AMD Athlon™ XP 1800+
stepping        : 1
cpu MHz         : 1499.989
cache size      : 256 KB
fdiv_bug        : no
hlt_bug         : no
f00f_bug        : no
coma_bug        : no
fpu             : yes
fpu_exception   : yes
cpuid level     : 1
wp              : yes
flags           : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov                                                  pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
bogomips        : 2988.44

Now I put the HD on my portege.
