I was happily running DSL v3.2 on my box. Then came v3.3. An upgrade is in order, it is a good thing! Fortunately, I was prepared. I had done my homework and did a frugal install as I learned from the wiki. All I have to do now to upgrade a frugal install, replace my old KNOPPIX file with the new KNOPPIX file, according to the wiki. Here we go: Denied! File system is a Read only file. I tried chmod, but it will not let me. What is the trick?

The current KNOPPIX file must not be in use in order to overwrite it. You can either boot "toram" to load KNOPPIX into ram, or boot a live CD or any other Linux system.

The box is quite old and has only 64Mb of ram. So to RAM option will not work. My experience has been that the hard disk is not accessible when using a Live CD. My only option may be to reinstall everything? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't have any problems accessing hard drive partitions when loading from a CD. Just boot and apt/tools/Frugal Install should do it.
(note: Did you mount the partition?)

Depending on how you did your original frugal installation, i.e., how did you originally boot to perform the installation, both frugal install scripts have an upgrade option. So it is not really a re-install and no manual copying is required.
