Thanks for the quick responce...tried the usb bootdisk and it didnt work for me. It's looking for an iso image and there is none on the harddrive so it goes into kernal panic.I have installed dsl like i would install to a hd on ide channel substuting hda1 with sda1
Maybe i should ask whats the best way to install dsl on a usb hd(i have 2gig)I want it to run like a normal hd install
thanks again

EDIT <scratch, I didn't see the USB HD you wrote about..sri>  EDIT

I wrote an entire post about USBkeys..   :)

I wonder if the bootusb-0.8 image floppy would work better ?
It would possibly detect your USB HD better, but it still will look
for a /knoppix/knoppix compressed filesystem.

EDIT < looks like you tried that too > EDIT

I don't know how your lilo was setup when you completed the HDInstall ..
And, I'm assuming your Motherboard can boot from a USB-HDD device..

Lilo is usually the bootloader for HDInstalled systems ..
But can your computer GET to the bootloader?

No and thats where my problem is..motherboard cant boot usb, only cd or floppy(toshiba laptop p200 32meg mem)

so cant get to lilo so thats why i was using another boot floppy called RUNT It alowes me to boot into dsl but with no hardware detection  because it loads the linux kernel from the floppy and not the usb drive like i need it to for proper operation
as a result the pcmcia slot and the built in modem dont work

i think what i need is a floppy that will look for the kernel on
the usbhd but dont know that much about linux to know how to do that
thanks again
