I'm trying to install DSL to an old Compaq Presario 433. I don't have a cd drive, but have managed to figure out how to mount -o loop to get at the CD image files, created my boot floppy and extracted the KNOPPIX directory to the root of /hda1

Now when I boot the floppy, I choose "knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda1"   (And yes, /dev/hda1 is where I put the KNOPPIX directory.)

It seems to start out fine, loading vmlinuz and miniroot.gz

Then I tell it to use video mode 0 and it goes on to uncompress Linux and starts trying to boot the kernel.

But then it halts. "No coprocessor found and no math emulation present. Giving up."

Am I doing something wrong, or have I just found a machine too limited for DSL? I was able to get RH5.2 onto this puppy, so I was hoping DSL would go in. :-(

I don't think the DSL kernel has math coprocessor emulation support enabled in it, as it's only old machines (such as yours:;):) that need it. If you want to run DSL, you'll have to recompile the kernel and remaster it AFAIK.
You might have more luck with something like Slackware.

You could try a kernel (or boot disk) from Knoppix or Debian (DSL is based on Knoppix which again is based on Debian) - have no idea if it will work. An alternative could be Vector Linux 1.8 or 2.0.
