Yes

You will need to apt-get the reiserfstools in order to format a reiserfs partition.

My advice is to use reiserfs version 3.x for your computer.  Reiserfs version 4.x has been unstable for some users.  Hopefully in the future they will get the bugs out and it will be as rock-solid as 3.x is today.

Also, the DSL kernel does not have support for reiserfs in it, so you can't boot DSL from a reiser partition.

At least I couldn't the last time I tried.

Try it and tell us how you fare.

SU, the kernel itself does support reiserfs but the driver may need to be loaded as a module instead of direct builtin filesystem support.

If this is true, it means that reiserfs.o needs to be "insmod"-ed as part of the initial miniroot boot process or the boot will fail.

This can be accomplished with a custom minirt file (a pain in the butt to do for a novice user) or loaded up via the "expert" boot process with the resiserfs.o file located on a floppy disk.

But your point about using reiserfs as the main DSL boot partition is a good one.

I did not consider it before because my knoppix 3.4 reiserfs hd install works fine and both systems use the same kernel.

Thanks for your hints. I'm using DSL for cloning Kanotix workstations and I need reiserfs for formatting only. DSL is never booting with reiserfs on the workstations in our school.
