Dear DSL people,

I have been looking at the files on my LinuxFormat CD version of DSL......

There is no Knoppix directory there.......

All there is are the following files; damnsmall-0.5.2.iso, damnsmall-0.5.2.lsm, a .version file, .short file, a .descr file, a .link file and a .licence file.

THAT IS IT.

There is no knoppix file or folder I can see.  There is no boot.img file anywhere............

How do I boot up DSL using thse files?

What do I do with the iso file?

How do I get at the boot.img file?

All the best,

Michael Fothergill

It seems that you are not familiar with the concept of .iso file
:)

It's easy. Burn a cd with your favourite cd-burning program. in Winblows, i.e.  use nero burning. in the "file" menu, choose "burn cd from image". Insert a blank cd in the drive. Choose "finalize cd" as a burning option (or not, if you're using a rw cd). and get the job done.
After  that, insert cd in your drive, restart the pc and, in bios supports cd booting as first option (else, set bios options like that), Damn Smalli Linux will be right on your desktop.
good luck

The dsl distro is in the damnsmall-0.5.2.iso file.

Within Windows you can access / extract the contents of the iso file using the winimage or winiso programs. In the /knoppix directory you will find the dsl compressed image called "knoppix" - about a 49MB file and a boot floppy disk image boot.img 1.4 MB - the contents of which can also be accessed / extracted using winimage. In the boot.img file are the compressed linux kernel - vmlinuz and the compressed boot root file system miniroot.gz.

DSL may be booted from a VFAT partition - hard disk , USB Flash or Compact Flash using Loadlin calling vmlinuz and miniroot.gz as follows

1. within windows 9X format the boot device with FAT place dos system files on to make bootable and create a directory named knoppix
2. extract the contents of ISO and boot.img to the /knoppix directory using winimage
3. download from the net  loadlin version 1.6c and place loadlin in the /knoppix directory
4. read the examples in the loadlin documentation on how to boot linux - typically using a linux.bat file such as

/knoppix/loadlin /vmlinuz initrd=miniroot.gz root=/dev/hda1

where /dev/hda1 refers to drive c:

a parameter file containing DSL boot options can also be used, eg booting with

/knoppix/loadlin @/knoppix/dsl.par

where dsl.par can contain references to vmlinuz, miniroot.gz, root device, vga settings, ethernet card settings etc as per the loadlin doco.

NB this works - Using a VIA EPIA-M motherboard I've been able to boot using above technique from
Flash connected to usb port ( Belkin 8 in 2 adapter),
Flash or Microdrive connected to flash-ide adapter
- all devices with FAT format dos bootable and loadlin.

Note this approach allows DSL to coexist on an existing fat formatted HD partition with dos or win9x on board; there are alternate ways of booting vmlinuz / miniroot.gz using syslinux directly without the need to use dos system files.

Hope you find this useful

John,

Thanks for the info. I havn't tried this yet, but wouldn't an easier way be, to partition the flash drive under DSL running from the live CD, using fdisk, then do a dsl-hdinstall to /dev/sda1? This is what I was going to try as soon as I get my flash card and reader. That script would format, copy the files, and install lilo to the master boot record of the flash drive. Also another idea was to do a frugall_install to the flash card. What do you think, would this work? All I would have to do then is plug the card into my Netvista machine that only boots from compact flash. In theory it should work, but we all know how that goes.
