I've got this really old laptop with damn small linux on it and, im not getting any sound. The laptop is a compaq armada 1560D and the sound card appears to be an ESS 1878 which should be sound blaster compatible. When i run sndconfig and select sound blaster, i can hear the sample file that plays but, no other programs seem to be able to produce sound and they all have various errors such as: Couldn't open audio Please check that: Your soundcard is configured properly You have the correct output plugin selected No other program is blocking the soundcard
I get that error with xmms.
I have seen various sites where people have got it to work but, i have had difficulty following the instructions on them - the instructions go well over my head.
