After you do a knoppix install, you get a full debian system that, I assume, is exactly like a debian install (apart from the word "knoppix" here and there). Is this the same with dsl, or do I need to replace things like busy box and make?

For instance, could I ever do "apt-get install kde" without any errors from a dsl-hdinstall?

DSL is not intended to morph into a 100% official Debian install when it is installed to a hard disk.

For example, autodetection and the Kdrive TinyX Xwindows servers are used in DSL, while Debian uses standard Xfree86 and fixed detection of hardware.

However, apt-get is part of DSL and there is a large selection of Debian packages that you can install without a problem.  Just don't install any packages that make changes to the Xserver and you should be in good shape.

In the latest versions of DSL, you get the option of replacing the busybox utilities with the standard GNU programs.  This is called an "Enhanced" hd install.

You don't need to worry about replacing "make" because the DSL livecd does not include the make program or the GCC compiler suite.
