At this point system locks up and must be power cycled.  It had W98 but I used Partition Magic and built EXT3 partition and a swap area.  Still locks up.  HELP!!!!

I had the same problem on a Toshiba Portege 3490CT. My solution was to load the "nopcmcia" option. Ie: "dls nopcmcia".
