loading. Do you guys know how I can enable the soundcard driver? DSL loads fine from my bootable cd but for some reason the computer disables the soundcard when I start DSL. The soundcard is a Rockwell brand. Oh and also we have a Dell Dimension desktop 2350 with Windows Xp and when we try DSL in it it won't boot from the live cd. Is that because it is an NTFS system or because the Bios boot from cd option isn't enabled. Lots of thanks guys :)

I have had problems with the rockwell stuff in general be it a modem or a sound card. I think you are kinda stuck for now. I think the new kernel 2.6 has a lot of new soundcard stuff maybe that will work for you when John includes it (hint hint). As far as your other PC try to enable boot from cd by change the bios. You can do this by press F2 or Delete before the O/S boots up. Be carefull in there you can really mess stuff up butit is pretty simple. Just change it to enable boot from CD. If that doesn't work post again we can get it going.

Good Luck

Hi :) Well a friend of mine who is into computers said something about Rockwell integrating their soundcards in HP computers into their modems  and we both think it's that but we're not sure. He suggested I d/l a generic soundcard driver and try it but I don't know how that would work since DSL loads from the ram. I'll have to ask my fiance to enable bios. This is his computer and he's kind of iffy about some stuff since he's still paying on it which is understandable. He told me he would go to the bios and check for me soon. Hopefully we can at least get it running on this computer because I'd like to try getting online with DSL. Thanks so much for the advice :) I appreciate it. I'll let you know what happens when we try the bios on this system. Take care :)

We went into the bios and we didn't really know which option to choose. It looked like this:

Cd Rom - not chosen
Hda1 - not chosen
Hdab1 - not chosen
Floppy - First

Is this where you choose which to boot from first? Cuz the options it gave you to go through beside each were first, second, third etc..

Thanks :)

I have not had much experience with computers from major manufacturers like HP, Compaq, etc.

I do recall that the BIOS is somewhat limited in features as compared with the motherboards directly from the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers, I.E. Asus, A-Bit, MSI, Intel, etc)

Do you have the manual handy? If you are able to get the soundcard working in Windows then it should be accessible to Linux.

A workaround is to find out what specific driver Linux needs is to use a more "robust" bootable Linux distribution such as Knoppix.

If you have only dial-up internet access click on the link below to a website that can send you burned cds of various linux versions. The link is specific for Knoppix:

Knoppix on LinuxCD.org

try it and see if your soundcard is recognized by Knoppix.
