On a Gateway Solo 5100
266 mobile pentium
144 meg Ram
Dual boot with 98SE
Frugal install 1.5 with grub
usb disabled in grub

After checking Bios settings. Switching from <AUTO> to <Manual> settings and writing down the info.
In my case,
Base IO 220~22F
DMA=1
DMA=2
IRQ=5
FM=388
mpu_io= 330~331

Did a
Code Sample
modinfo sd

to see if the module was detected. It was.
Then a
Code Sample
modprobe sb io=220 irq=5 dma=1 dma=2 mpu_io=330

Started XMMS and

LO! The sound was heard...
Being good the modprobe line was added to
Code Sample
bootlocal.sh

All actions were performed as in sudo. It is important to mount you HD as well, seeing as you'll be modding files there.

Thorough discussion of ESS configuration here -
http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4615

And some extra information since you are dual-booting (as I am); the Linux OSS sb module may "misbehave" (play sound too fast for example) if the sound chip is first initialised by a Window$ driver.
The solution is to fully power-down, before booting into Linux.
