I'm not able to get a useful Internet connection via dial-up.

I used the configuration facility available via the DSL panel to configure a connection to an ISP and then used the dial facility. I heard the characteristic sounds of a connection and then tried to browse to a URL, but was unsuccessful. I then used the hang-up facility. I went to the messages file to see what had happened.

According to my limited understanding of these things, everything was fine up to the stage at which I got the following:

Script /etc/ppp/ip-up finished (pid 790), status=0x0

Then there appear the following two lines:

sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x1 magic=0x4e12fa66]
recd [LCP EchoRep id=0x1 magic=0x740028c8]

Those two lines are then repeated 10 times, with the only change being that the id increases each time until the final one of 0xb.

After that comes:

Terminating on signal 15

Then the ip-down script runs and the connection is terminated.

I hope I've included sufficient information to permit anyone who knows about these things to tell me what it is I've omitted to do so far by way of configuration.

Assuming I have, I'd be grateful for such a person's telling me what it is.

Actually, that looks normal.
You did get an IP? Check by typing ifconfig ppp0
Also check nameserver by typing
cat /etc/resolv.conf
Do you see the nameserver IP for your provider?

Thanks very much for replying.

I'll deal with your questions in reverse order.

The resolv.conf file had only one IP address not commented out. It wasn't one belonging to the ISP I'm trying to connect to (the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia). I commented that out, added the primary DNS IP of the ISP I'm trying to connect to and saved the file.

I then used the dial facility and when apparently connected, ran ifconfig ppp0. I don't presently have any easy means of reproducing in this message all the output, but it seemed to me I had an IP. At the start of the output, following ppp0, it said: "Link encap: Point-Point Protocol, net addr: 149.171.243.104".

Having done that, I then opened Dillo and was told that www.dslos.com couldn't be found. I then typed in the URL of a local broadcaster, www.abc.net.au. Again, I was told that the site couldn't be found. I closed Dillo and opened Firefox. Again, I tried the ABC and was again told the site couldn't be found. I then hung up.

If you have any further advice, I'd be very grateful to get it.

Thanks again,

Leslie

A later development, which the forum wouldn't accept as an edit to my last post.

As an experiment, I used pppconfig to create a connection to another ISP. That other connection worked perfectly. After ending that connection, I tried the original connection again, with the same result as before. I connected, but when I tried to go to any URL in a browser, I was told that DNS couldn't resolve the name. I then ended that connection and tried to delete its configuration via pppconfig. However, I couldn't. When I chose "delete the connection" and then "ok", I was sent back to the previous screen every time.
