Congrats, jerome5! Don't you see now why they say linux is fun! :)

I have always said that Linux is very similar to golf. I have never understood how I could have fun being frustrated, but I am having fun with linux!  :p

On a related subject.....

I have been fortunate so far with not having to deal alot with modules. Would it make sense to have people contribute their difficult modules as .dsl files to the repository to help others?

Just a thought

Chris

How did I get my winmodem to work under linux?

The truth is I really dont know and I am not sure that I can reproduce these results
(because there is no way that I am touching my system after this).

But here is what I can rember.

Dell released drivers for my modem BCM4212 56k V.92 data/fax modem.
The drivers cover the BCM42XX modem chips.

You need the kernel source for DSL even though I have 0.8 I used the source for
0.7.3 .

I downloaded a program named ALIEN inorder to conver the source package from a
rpm to a .deb file. Then Installed the driver source.
It created a .spec and the actuall source file.

I ran make and got come compile errors and I fixed them by commenting out a few lines in the source.

At this point I had the driver module (BCMSM.o) but still no working modem.

Then I was tolld to use
insmod -f /path_to_module/BCMSM.o
to load the module.

And I had to tinker with another install script inorder to get it to make
a file called
/dev/ttySMconfig

Then I basically executed some commands I found in the make file by hand
untill some other files were created
/dev/ttySMAudio0
/dev/ttySM0
and some others

I ran pppconfig and used /dev/ttySM0 as the port and to my suprise the modem actually dialed!

So here I am posting this abstract of what I did, if anyone else has a DELL
with a BCM42XX winmodem I might be able to help.
