Greetings- I successfully (and easily) set up a ftpserver w/ DSL behind my router on a cable modem. I am using it as storage for pictures while travelling as too avoid loss and/or buying additional 1Gb SD cards. I am curious to which is a better choice as a ftpservwer: desktop P350MHz 384Mb RAM 20Gb HD versus laptop P266MHz 154Mb RAM 40Gb HD. The desktop is flawlessly fast but draws more power (plus heat and some noise). The laptop seems to stall (as stated by the ftpclient) but has a larger capacity and builtin battery backup.

It is most likely the additional RAM on the desktop that provides the difference in upload speed? I am running frugal HD installs the only real difference is I use "toram" in the boot codes.

Single-user FTP is not a RAM-intensive service.  Having more RAM (beyond a safe minimum level, of course) should not make a big performance difference.

As for laptop vs. desktop, the choice is yours.  But keep in mind that laptops usually have some sort of powersaver mode that can shut them down after periods of inactivity.

All things being equal, I'd probably eat the extra buck or two on my electricity bill and use the desktop, but that's just my personal opinion.
