I've intentionally pissed people off and had my buddies try to hack me from inside my own network.  So far no one has gotten past the rc.firewall and these guys have all been running linux for atleast 10 years.

So it seems pretty good to me.

Its all in the config file, and making sure your system is up to date.
I use Linux to protect all of the Windows networks I manage. One client has over 100,000.00 in servers/pc's behind a free version of Redhat 9.0. with iptables, running on a junk server that is now 7 years old.

Linux is one of the few things out there that, "You get what you put into it, not what you buy."

:D
