I've done a hd install and the wireless settings are stored in /opt/bootlocal.sh.
While booting the system with the pcmcia card plugged in, the card won't be activated.
But when I store the same settings in .xinitrc and insert the card when X is starting, my wlan0 gets up and running.
I would like to reduce my physical interaction...so any ideas are welcome.

Perhaps the automatic dhcp request is preventing your wireless to come up. Try adding nodhcp to your lilo or grub append section. Usually then /opt/bootlocal.sh should work fine with the appropriate pump command.
