Hi,
I'm using a Orinoco gold PCMCIA card in my laptop running DSL .8.2.
It works fine with my Linksys AP(meaning I can get on the net), but when I use Wavemon and scan for access points it always says "no access points in range", even though I have 3 right here in my neighborhood that I can see from Windows machines. I also downloaded the Wmwifi from the repository, and when I run it it shows up for just a second in the right hand corner then disappears. I also plugged another card in, a Linksys wpc11 V2.5 and it works well also but gives me the same problems as far as seeing any other AP's. Anybody got a Idea?

Perhaps you have your wireless config setup for "managed" or "restricted" mode ..

To be able to "Wardrive" , you need to set up your config for "ad-hoc" connectivity

Kent,

How would you do that? I have used the Wifi setup from the control panel, but don't fully understand what all it's asking so I end up taking most all the defaults. Yes I know, and I call myself a Ham.
BTW, you didn't anything like what I thought in your picture.

You perhaps would like the AirSnort .dsl that ke4nt1 built
Its at http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=2604

Quote
Introduction
AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys. AirSnort operates by passively monitoring transmissions, computing the encryption key when enough packets have been gathered.

802.11b, using the Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP), is crippled with numerous security flaws. Most damning of these is the weakness described in " Weaknesses in the Key Scheduling Algorithm of RC4 " by Scott Fluhrer, Itsik Mantin and Adi Shamir. Adam Stubblefield was the first to implement this attack, but he has not made his software public. AirSnort, along with WEPCrack, which was released about the same time as AirSnort, are the first publicly available implementaions of this attack.

AirSnort requires approximately 5-10 million encrypted packets to be gathered. Once enough packets have been gathered, AirSnort can guess the encryption password in under a second.

caulktel ,

I'm not sure of the exact syntax to guide you..
I have never played with an Orinoco card or command set.

There are 2 command sets for wireless ..
I think yours responds to the iwconfig command set..
My prism2 uses the wlan-ng command set..

Here is a link for tweaking your wlan-ng setup for ad-hoc
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2002/07/msg01763.html

This website get into the nitty-gritty of working and patching
your orinoco setup for ad-hoc ..
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Orinoco.html

This website makes adding ad-hoc mode to your settings pretty simple...
http://internet2.motlabs.com/ipaq/howto/ssid_adhoc.htm
ESSID="YOURSSID"
MODE="Ad-Hoc"
