Yeah I'm back with more noobish questions....
This time I'm trying to connect to the internet. I tried using the pop-up menus that you can access by right clicking the mouse but the function/process never seems to finish. Then I got to thinking..... my modem? This machine was originally set-up for windows, including the modem. It's a 56k Motorola and all the software/drivers/etc that came with is are for Windows. So I'm guessing that my modem is not even being detected and is not designed to even work with a non-win o/s.... is this correct?

If you find the model code/number of your modem, then search for those drivers on google you should have some luck, fingers crossed.
Otherwise post it here and someone might be able to help.

OK, here's what i found out......
The DSL kernel is 2.4.26
I went to the motorola homepage to see what Linux versions and kernels were supported and here's their complete list:
* RedHat 7.3 (kernel version 2.4.18-3, sm56-06.05.00-1.rh7.i386.rpm)
* RedHat 8.0 (kernel version 2.4.18-14, sm56-06.05.00-1.rh8.i386.rpm)
* RedHat 9.0 (kernel version 2.4.20-8, sm56-06.05.00-1.rh9.i386.rpm)
* Mandrake Linux 9.2 (kernel version 2.4.22-10mdk, sm56-06.05.02-1.mdk.i586.rpm)
* Mandrake Linux 10.0 (kernel version 2.6.3-7mdk, sm56-06.05.02-2.mdk10_263-7.i586.rpm)
* Suse Linux 9.0 (kernel version 2.4.21, sm56-06.05.02-1.suse90-020421-99.athlon.rpm)
* Suse Linux 9.0 (kernel version 2.4.21, sm56-06.05.02-1.suse90-020421-99.i586.rpm)
As you can see no DSL and no kernel version 2.4.26
On another site it talked about writing a kernel...... that's a little outta my league right now. So it looks like I'm back to square one and maybe just buying a modem that's designed for Linux. But even then am I sure it will be supported by DSL??

Ah, more wonderful news..... When I saw the model name I kinda had a feeling that the "sm" in Mororola SM56 stood for software modem, bummer. :(

I use a US Robotics model 5610B internal modem and can connect on dial-up but had to manually choose my modem as "ttyS4".I also use the same modem on my Fedora Core 2 box.
