I can ping google.com's IP address, and ifconfig shows the dhcp acquired address properly, and i can ping my gateway/router successfully (192.168.1.1), but not www.google.com.  This is a problem because if i try to upgrade GNU utils, it says "wget: www.ibiblio.org: Host name lookup failure" twice and asks me to exit, and if i try to go to the myDSL extension browser, no extensions are showing up, which i can only assume is because it trys to use a net name rather than ip address to retrieve them.  my apologizies if im doing something stupid, but i just wanted to learn linux on an old computer, and this small linux seemed perfect.

Hi
Address to name translation is usually done either by the /etc/hosts file or the use of a Domain Name Server DNS.  You should be able to configure your device the supplies the DHCP addresses to also supply the address of the name server.  Your ISP should be able to tell you what address to use.  If not  you can search the internet for generic name servers.
Good luck

thanks hawki, you gave me an idea: i changed my /etc/resolv.conf so that the nameserver is now my router's IP (192.168.1.1) and it was kinda working...

i can now ping successfully www.google.com, but if i try links www.google.com, no can do.  same still with upgrading GNU utils, but this time it says that the connection timed out?  if i try ping www.ibiblio.org, it works fine...

I've the same problem, now that I've installed to HD. Before installing All worked fine. I've checked in my resolv.conf and it contains two nameservers, the right ones, but still the connection doesn't allow name resolution. I'm using an adsl modem connected to my ethernet port. I've read messages in this forum but can't find a solution. Is anywhere an howto?

I've resolved the problem. I've manually changed my DNS and now domain names are resolved. Probably my internet service provider uses DNS not compatible with my configuration. I'm not a network guru...
