Greetings!
I'm new, so please don't throw stuff...
I've got a frugal install to a 128MB Flash card. DSL works great, however, when I try to install a cellular modem card (PCMCIA) it doesn't seem to be recognized. The card is a Sierra A550 Rev 1 wireless modem.
At boot I get the following console messages:
cardmgr[349]: starting, version 3.2.2
cardmgr[349]: unsupported card in socket 0
cardmgr[349]: product info: "Sierra Wireless", "AirCard 550", "A550", "Rev 1"
cardmgr[349]: manfid: 0x0192, 0xa550 function: 6 (network)
The card looks like it's alive, as there's a flashing green led on the card, although, that just could be an indication that the card is "there" not necessarily communicating with DSL.
I've tried making the config changes and adding the card's drivers in the /etc/pcmcia directory, per Sierra's web site (http://airprime.com/SupportDownload/ac550_Linux.asp), and then trying to kill the cardmgr and restart it. I just get memory complaints from cardmgr. I know this card works on Red Hat 9 with no probelms.
Does anyone know if I'm getting the unsupported message becuase DSL/Knoppix doesn't truly support it or if I'm not doing the driver loads correctly at boot?
I've tried booting without the card installed, making sure that the drivers and config files were present and then inserting the card. I get a lot of beeps from the PC but not the "right" ones. (It's supposed to beep twice when it's happy, just like my Furby...)
Can someone please help me? Since I'm new, could someone please describe how you go about adding drivers to /etc/pcmcia, and /etc/pcmica/cis directories and have them present when the box is booting?
If the card is functioning, should I see the device in /proc/devices? On RH9, it shows up as /dev/modem, I don't see that happening on DSL
