I have a sony vaio C1VE which has a default resolution of 1024x480, unfortuately dsl seems to think I want 640x480 so I have a very tiny screen.

I tried xsetup.sh but 1024x480 is not there. I also tried editing /etc/X11/xsetup but nothing happens.

What else affects the resolution?

For the tinyK X server which DSL uses, you can try the command
Xvesa -listmodes
Also, try the Xvesa GUI from the control panel and you will be presented with available resolutions.
Other than that, you would have to use the XFree86 dsl extension and make or obtain a config file for your particular video hardware.

There is also a slight possibility that you could boot up to a framebuffer mode that is supported by your laptop and then use the xfbdev server.

See the F3 bootscreen page and also google for help on your laptop/video chipset to see what works best for you.  The general idea is you type:

dsl vga=xxx xsetup

where xxx is the correct framebuffer code for your laptop.
you then choose the xfbdev server when prompted.

Otherwise, your best recourse is to install XFree86.dsl and configure it to work with your video driver.

How do you go about installing XFree86.dsl ? - seems silly probably to you but I haven't a clue.

I don't know where you are in learning about DSL but...

1. Read Getting Started to get an overview
2. Read the MyDSLhowto.pdf located here
3. Use the MyDSL desktop icon System section and look for XFree86.dsl.info and click it and then read the info file.
4. Proceed to download it

Then please use the MyDSL Extensions System section of the forums to ask for further help.

While in that section you may wish to Search for xfree86 starting with the beginning and read past posts about using this extension.
