This posting just to help others who may encounter the same problems.
I have tried DSL on a desktop machine, and on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite pro. I had expected video problems, so I selected fb1024x768 at the boot prompt. That worked well, but then the startup sequence froze after a minute or two at the point where the ACPI stuff was checked (things like the poer off button, etc). I tried again, but there didn't seem to be a boot prompt to avoid acpi. I looked back at some earlier posts on this forum (and there are many useful posts, thanks to all who take the time) and someone mentioned using 'acpi=off'. I wasn't sure, because that isn't listed on the 0.8 boot screen.
Anyway, it worked. To start DSL on my laptop, I choose:
[Boot:] fb1024x768 acpi=off
and DSL runs perfectly.
By the way, anyone know if the T4600 inbuilt modem is supported? I guess not if it's a softmodem thingy.
regards, and thanks to the folk who post, but, of course, thanks to those who conceived and implemented DSL so well. It's very impressive. Very.
