Compaq 1255 Presario Laptop
HD 5 gb, 32 mb ram, NeoMagic video
-----------------------------------

Hello,

I installing DSL 1.0 on my Compaq 1255, work fine :) only my sound card ESS 1887/89 is not installed. The linux report, sound card is missing or not configured. The sound work very good, I test.

I seek drivers on Internet and not found, this drive is part of of new kernels version.

Please, thank you for any help.

I don't know if you have the same card as I do.  Someone just gave me a Compaq Presario 1655 and I did a dsl HD install on it.  Since the soundcard didn't configure properly, I came to this forum seeking answers but found that the only advice was to search the whole forum for 'ess*', which returned way too many posts with which to waste my time.

In my case, sndconfig caused a segfault when I tried to configure the card.  What I did discover, however, is that the SB driver worked for my card. I was able to get sound working by simply using 'modprobe sb' (as root, of course) to load the sb drivers.  At this point, I discovered that I had an IRQ conflict which I fixed by changing the IRQ in my motherboard settings.  Problem solved.

After that, I manually added the sound drivers to my '/etc/modules' file and it's been working flawlessly ever since.

Supposedly the Compaq 1255 has an ESS audio sound system.  So searching for ess* should get you some information on how to get an ess sound card working with DSL.  But you can also use it in Soundblaster mode if you prefer.

Sure.  As long as you don't mind wading through 200 useless results.
