I have an Evo n610c laptop.  It is the only machine I own, and I want to partition and install linux on the partition, dual-boot to Windows XP pro.

The problem with every Linux distro I have come across, including Slax, which is another popular live boot cd, is that there is no ACPI support for my laptop.  Unfortunately that means that my fan will not run, and the laptop overheats.  Does anyone know if DSL has at least support for my laptop's fan, or is there a way to set it to?

If anyone has information on this topic please reply.  Thank you for your time and effort.

I don't have the particular laptop so I can't offer specific help.  However, I find your description of the fan being off with no acpi support quite weird.  Normally, with acpi turned off, the fan's operation will be syncronized with a basic power-consuming operation (such as disk access or prolonged memory or processor operations).  So in short, the power management system should default to a "dumb" setting that is supposed to be overcompensated.

I was looking through this description from another owner of an Evo laptop.

Apparently, full acpi support is provided with the 2.6.x kernel.  Unfortunately, DSL only has the 2.4.26 kernel.

If I may venture to guess, I'd say there should be something in the BIOS power management setup that sets this function to default to some value.  Right now, it may just be set to default to OFF.

Thanks for your input.  I'll see if I can find a distro with a 2.6.x kernel.  Thanks again.
