Hello all I have a toshiba 7010CT 300mhz / 128 ram with 6g harddrive and a DVD/CDRW with ubuntu on it now, 4 min boot up :(  This laptop is for the kids to do there home work.

what im looking for alot faster then that..

apps needed.

firefox / thunderbird mail / open office / cups printer / plug and play / gaim / irc / k3b /wireless tools.. and SPEED WOULD HELP ... lol

ps I have been installing the os by pulling the harddrive out and placing it into my Presario laptop and the install I put that harddrive back into the Toshiba and re-config the hardware.. is there a easyer way of doing the install? The toshiba im unable to get a cd/rom to boot up...

I believe dsl will work very well for what you have described. It will definetely run faster with dsl as it is very effecient and works very well with older hardware.

As far as the apps that you have mentioned I believe the vast majority of those can be found in the dsl extensions, which are highly recommended.

I cant offer you much advice with the circumstances of your installation. I dont have very much experience installing without a cdrom.
