Sorry, my mistake.
The file I edited to change oldstable to stable was /etc/apt/sources.list.
Actually, the failed apt-get upgrade seems to have had side effects worse than I thought. I tried to boot it up now to tell you the exact error, and got:

Since it looks like I'm going to have to reinstall anyway (no big deal, since I haven't done much with it yet), what should I be doing after I finish the non-frugal install and restart to ensure that installing apt and using it from that point forward will be as painless as possible?
