DSL on a Pentium MMX 166MHzForum: User Feedback Topic: DSL on a Pentium MMX 166MHz started by: weta Posted by weta on Dec. 14 2005,09:13
Just thought I'd let you know that my ready-for-the-dump Win95 PC has just been ressurrected thanks to DSL.It's only got 64Mb but it seems to cope well with surfing and playing MP3s - I really didn't expect to get a GUI Linux to run on it! I've even got it connected to the web via a crossover cable into my XP Pro box and playing MP3s off the network. Sweeet Good work Team DSL Posted by hs7sv on Dec. 14 2005,09:16

I have an old Toshiba 2540cds with 96MB of RAM. I tried using Knoppix on it but it wouldn't load the GUI, said it didn't have enough RAM. After reading this I may try DSL to see if I can get a gui on it!

96Megs is more than enuff!!!!!Brian AwPhuch Posted by ruserious on Dec. 14 2005,23:26
Pentium-90 with 40 MB RAM is also running well with gui - at least with dillo as a browser. While firefox does work as well, it's (subjectively) a lot less fun.

My 266mhz AMD with 126mb RAM won't boot because I get a damn "can't find KNOPPIX filesystem error", though the same disk works fine in my other two machines.

Might be a bad CDROM You might have to end up pulling the drive out and putting it on a 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter and installing that way (incidentally..this is the most quick and painless method if you dont have a floppy or working CDROM) Brian AwPhuch Posted by weta on Dec. 15 2005,06:03
Hmmmmm strange thing I've noticed ... I rebooted my DSL box immediately before going to work this morning and the status bars indicated that I had 75% of my 64Mb Ram available. I've just got home and looked at it again and without anything being done on the machine at all since booting I now only have 21% left!Where has my memory gone? (who am I and what am I doing here? I forget ... ;) ) Posted by gunnix on Dec. 15 2005,16:06
Don't worry, it's probably just cache using memory. When you really need the memory the unused stuff is cleared and you won't notice the difference. Or ofcourse there could be a program with a memory leak... Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 15 2005,19:25
It's probably that "Xvesa" memory leak that is being discussed here in the forum.Try using jwm instead of fluxbox. Does it still happen? Posted by Weedman on Dec. 16 2005,12:05
mmn.. tasty!i cant believe how well dsl works on an old p1-133 with 48mb ram. I had it running (unbelievably) on a 486-dx4 @ 100mhz with 32mb ram... Unbelievable. today i discovered the hidden little tasty piece of cake... the dsl control panel! it gives me hardware details! what other idtsro does that?!? delicious dsl... my own piece of new cheesecake in an old box! Welcome to the Revolution!!!P.S. Dont keep it a secret! Brian AwPhuch Posted by Weedman on Dec. 16 2005,23:49
thanks!i haven't kept it a secret..far from it! i tested dsl 2 on some school computers to show it off to a friend. It worked EVERY time. Thats something you don't see every day (at least on these pcs, they were all running windows 98). oh, a quick question... how would you (or could you) get a framebuffer on a VESA 1.2 graphcis card? is it possible? thanks weed Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 17 2005,06:15
You can try the various VESA framebuffer modes listed on the F3 page and see if any of them work.If not, you are then limited to text mode unless your atticware is compatible with XFree86 version 4.x You would then install the xfree86.dsl extension and try to get it to work with your card. Or if really adventurous, you could do a dpkg-restore and then try to install Xfree86 3.3.6 from the Debian repository. Either way, expect to spend several hours banging your head against a wall trying to make it work. Posted by winux on Jan. 07 2006,13:22
I'm really willing to disclose this wonderful DSL package, BUT I need to have a French Keyboard working fine!!! I know I insist (maybe too much!) on this, but I'd be so happy to solve it and make the promotion of DSL!!! Can anyone help me w/ this? Posted by AwPhuch on Jan. 08 2006,09:01
If it has to be "PERFECT" for you to appreciate it...then I guess nothing can satisfyI think its about as "PERFECT" as 50Megs can get...and they make it more "PERFECT" with each and every tweak! Brian AwPhuch Posted by winux on Jan. 09 2006,17:18
No not at all. It's a perfect package BUT just imagine you have a qwerty keyboard w/ keys missing and you will see that to send mails it's a kind of problem!! Appart from that (which is sorry a blocking point) AGAIN it's a wonderful package. And if you can help me, you're very welcome. |
