DSL on Gateway Solo 233Mhz Pentium IIForum: User Feedback Topic: DSL on Gateway Solo 233Mhz Pentium II started by: jsmcdougall Posted by jsmcdougall on Dec. 14 2005,19:21
It just works.I've long been a fan of Linux in general, and larger distributions more specifically (SuSE, Mandriva, Fedora, etc.). But recently I have found that I do not need 99% of the programs and daemons in those distros that clog up my system resources. When it came time to resurrect my old Gateway laptop (because I can't afford an iBook), I immediately thought of Linux. I installed the new SuSE, and found that the bloat was too much for my < lil' > laptop to handle. I remembered the name Damn Small Linux from poking around < distrowatch.com > and thought I'd give it a try. It install flawlessly the first time, and everything "just worked." I was so excited by this new find that I made the mistake of downloading and trying several other tiny Linux distributions. None of them compared the the ease-of-use, size, and functionality of DSL. Thank you for a wonderful OS. Keep up the great work. Jesse Posted by AwPhuch on Dec. 14 2005,20:28

Amen to that, brother! I haven't been bothered to find out what Fedora Core 4 has got running in there by default but the gnome desktop is unbearably sluggish cf dsl. I might have to run fluxbox or icewm on it instead. Debian3.1 seems somewhat better if you uninstall a ton of bloat (everything you don't use). Posted by AwPhuch on Dec. 15 2005,22:32
