Booy Live CD vs FloppyForum: User Feedback Topic: Booy Live CD vs Floppy started by: joeo Posted by joeo on Mar. 06 2006,18:59
Hi All,I have a Targus USB Hub with 2 USB sticks. DSL 2.2b Boot from Live CD and the usb sticks are not recognized! They do not light up. Boot from floppy and both usb sticks are recognized and show up in the graphical mounter! They light up. Anyone know why the difference? Best Regards, Joe Posted by doobit on Mar. 06 2006,19:08
Maybe you need a syslinux version of DSL. That acts more like a floppy on certain equipment.

What is a syslinux version of DSL? Where can I find info on it and get it? Can it run as a Live CD?Thanks for your reply! Posted by doobit on Mar. 06 2006,19:22
Yes, it runs as a live CD, but boots differently from the isolinux versions. They are found wherever DSL can be downloaded - here for example:< http://damnsmalllinux.org/download.html > Posted by joeo on Mar. 06 2006,19:31
Thank you very much for all your help. I will try syslinux. Can a usb stick be used as a backup/restore drive? Posted by doobit on Mar. 06 2006,19:39
Yes, you can use a pendrive as a backup/restore drive. Just put the drive name (usually it's sda1) in the field after you click on the backup/restore button in the myDSL panel.

The syslinux version because of size limitations of the boot.img does not have usb boot time modules.I would sugest that you try the waitusb boot time option to see if that will allow time for all of your usb devices to register and therefore be recognized. Posted by joeo on Mar. 06 2006,22:07
syslinux works fine with the usb hub. Just like the floppy boot. The line that was missing from the syslinux was the following: [Re-}scanning ... I tried waitusb with dsl2.2b. It did not work with the hub. I should mention that the usb sticks work with 2.2b if they are plugged directly into the machine and not into the hub. Thank you for all the help. I am sure I will be needing a lot of it. Posted by anaconda on Mar. 07 2006,16:19
can you mount them manually?eg. mkdir /mnt/usb mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb __ What is the graphical mounter? Where can I find it? Posted by joeo on Mar. 07 2006,18:07
I am a newbie but will try to answer your questions. The graphical mounter is the thing in the lower right hand corner of the screen. If I use 2.2b and the hub, the usb sticks are not recognized. It is a though they were not there. Posted by doobit on Mar. 07 2006,19:07
If you open EmelFM as superuser you can navigate to /mnt and find your usb stick as sda?. Right click on it there and choose mount from the menu.

HI Doobit,What I did was open a terminal window. sudo su emelfm navigated to /mnt. no sda there. I think when the sicks are dark, linux does not know they are there. This only happens with a usb hub and 2.2b. When I use syslinux, the sticks on the hub work great. I use one of the sticks for my backup/restore. Thank you for yor help and patience! I wonder if there is some sort of USBHub driver that needs to be loaded in order to detect a device that is sitting on a hub. If so, maybe this driver is not loaded at boot time, which means that any devices that are connected to a hub will not be found.
