I've created a Digital Picture Frame using an old laptop, DSL, etc.

Now...I want another in a frame to display specific home interest stuff. Specifically, I'd like a widget engine similar to Konfabulator to run small apps that are constantly updated via the web. With a wireless card in my frame, it would be easy. I'd like to display a calendar, the temperature, weather radar, etc. Hung by the door, we can easily see what's on tap for the day. Throw in a sports gadget from LiveScore, and dude, the perfect device.

Problem is, there's no widget engine for Linux...DSL that is.

You may check in < myDSL Window Manager > and < dockapps.org >

EDIT: You may be interesting in < torsmo weather >

Torsmo Weather is cool. Pretty soon there will be no space left for anything but Torsmo on my 640x480 LCD.

I'm looking for something with more glitz, graphics, etc. The Konfabulator(just like Apple's Dashboard) widgets are way cool.

Couldn't we get the OS X version to run on DSL? After all, it's *nix based.

The operating system is based on BSD, but the graphic system is, as far as I know, proprietary software.  The best that could be done is to find open source equivalents.

Perhaps gdesklets or superkaramba could be built to work in DSL (please don't look at me...i'm just suggesting :D )

I dl the wmweather DSL extension. It installed in a folder off the root of the drive.

Whenever I attempt to build an install with the following command:

./configure && make install

It checks for numerous components I don't have, no gcc,cc,cc,cl, no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH.

This Linux stuff is confusing!!!

You don't need to compile it again. After installing (wmweather+2.9.dsl), you just use Menu --> MyDSL --> WmWeather + or command:-
Code Sample
/usr/bin/wmweather+

WMweather is lame. I want something with pizzaz, snap, graphics, coolness. Any other suggestions?
