DSL 2.3 = :-/Forum: User Feedback Topic: DSL 2.3 = :-/ started by: kwjake Posted by kwjake on Mar. 31 2006,03:18
Sup all. I was messing around with my old dsl boot cd (2.0), and was planning on installing it to a external usb-hdd. I formatted and partitioned the hdd, etc. Then I though that I might as well try the newest version (2.3) So I go and download it and boot it up. I must say, I was rather impressed with the new look . On the downside, it no longer recognizes my usb hdd, NOR my ethernet card . From what I understand it is because the kernel is downgraded..... ah well. Posted by doobit on Mar. 31 2006,18:26
What USB hdd and what ethernet card? FYI, you can keep the new look while using the 2.4.31 kernel by Frugal installing DSL-2.3, then doing an upgrade install of DSL-2.1b. there will be a couple of broken links, but it seems to still work OK. Try it if you want to play around and have nothing to lose.

Probably for the same reason, some of my office PCs had the same problem with ethernet cards. 3c905 would workbut not 3c905B - go figure. Haven't solved my hdd usb problem yet but 255 heads have a better chance, especially with older DSL versions. Posted by roberts on Mar. 31 2006,23:58
This topic has been beat to death.2.3 supports more devices than 2.0 or 2.1 dsl v1.5, dsl-2.2, dsl-2.3 and on are based on Knoppix and enjoys all devices supported by Knoppix v3.4 dsl v2.0 and v2.1 are not based on a Knoppix release and have limited device suppport. However, if 2.0 or 2.1 works for you then stay there until we release an upgraded kernel version (2.6) To continue to complain when this has been thoroughly explained does not help the effort. Well, I'm not exactly a regular here..... so I wouldn't know that it has. And I don't think I was complaining, I was just giving some feedback. I was just sad that the new version didn't work.... thats all. I'm basically happy with 2.1b. The ethernet that no longer worked was the onboard nvidia one on my DFI ultra-d. And the external hdd was a generic usb external hdd enclosure. |
