Are you going to keep DAMN SMALL, or switch to DEMI SIZE? Who came up with that? Sounds kinda French to me. Speaking of the French, where has Flonix gone? Can't find it anywhere...

What's in a nameThat which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet Posted by green on April 13 2006,02:58
I know at least one person in particular that will not use DSL because of the "damn" in the name.I have no desire to argue about it with him. So be it. However, DSL has gained quite a bit of popularity being known as Damn Small Linux or DSL, so changing it now may not be a good idea. Posted by lovdsl on April 13 2006,04:19
damn is an adverb meaning extremely.. evidently extremists prefer association with damnation and little will be done to sway the twisted mindset. it is just a word. I fail to comprehend the idea.

I think this argument is relevant from time to time, i never had the courage to question the "Damn" word, i was afraid it might just flame fellow dsl users while defending the name.i'll give a real example on why suggesting a new relative name matters. i would like my christian school to use dsl on their old computers, thereby utilising the old resources to good use, it is also a very good way to introduce linux for students, but i can never suggest dsl because of the "damn" word on its name.. How many other words are they not allowed to learn due to the environment encompassing them..is it not possible to teach understanding. or are the teachers not capable of it themselves..I suppose microsoft is shiney and would never do evil that could be seen by such a sheltered flock..interesting example.

I know there is negatives to our name, for instance, Linux Magazine has never mentions our project and I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the 'Damn' in our name. Also, we end up with awkward dances where people dance around the word 'damn' in referencing DSL.For instance, check out the IBM article: < http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-dsl.html >
While I am appreciative of the article, I cringed at the awkward "DSL Linux". That doesn't make much sense, the project isn't "Damn Small Linux Linux". Robert and I know that the word Damn keeps DSL from being applied in some circumstances, but there is a flip side. People don't forget 'Damn Small' and very descriptive. We have no plan to change the name. It has done very well for us. Yet, there is the home page at dslos.com. We did that so people offended by the word 'damn' or are addressing other people who may be offended by the word 'damn' could call it Demi Size Linux. We have never seriously considered changing the name. Posted by pr0f3550r on April 16 2006,10:34
I agree, 'Damn' is too offensive. I propose 'Devil'.

This is same logic that I won't use Puppy Linux. I know after readingreviews that it's a credible alternative. But I can't for the life of me use a distro with the word 'Puppy'. The image blooms a fluffy pet running through the woods in slow motion. I'd rather go back to windows than use that. |
