Bill Gates, Please Clean Your Crap Out of My CompForum: User Feedback Topic: Bill Gates, Please Clean Your Crap Out of My Comp started by: SocomRod Posted by SocomRod on April 20 2006,19:42
WOW!This is incredible. After years of paying through the nose for Microsoft operating systems, I decided to look into this "Linux" business. I stumbled across DSL and decided to try it in my old Dell Inspiron 4000, which had suffered a catastrophic virus attack, and I couldn't reinstall XP as I did not get a disk with this comp. My local FutureShop (Best Buy here in Canada) tech said he would be thrilled to reformat my hard drive and install xp for me, at full retail price for a full version package. Well, DSL on a live cd worked well, so I decided to try a hard drive install. For a Linux Newbie like me, it was a bit of an effort until I began to percieve some of the logic behind the command system. Now, I have DSL on hard drive that boots lightning fast. I still have some minor issues, like getting my wireless card to work, and figuring out how to change the password (made a rookie mistake during install), but this is actually fun. I still have a lot to learn, but I can tell you that Mr. Gates will not be getting any more money from me. To all you other lost souls out there who keep on installing xp every 30 days, give it up. Spend a little time learning how to use Linux. You don't even have to have a functioning hard drive if you use DSL. LONG LIVE THE PENGUIN!!! Posted by aveline on April 20 2006,21:15

That was fast. I already searched it. I think it may be a physical problem with the slot on my laptop. I'm going to try a USB adaptor and see if that works.35 seconds of searching, and I can now change passwords like a pro. If anyone is looking though, there is one thing that I haven't been able to find using the search button. I am trying to install limewire on this machine (mostly to see if Linux is really as virus tolerant as I've heard), and the emelFM.bin thing (I don't know what it is) has an install option. When I click on it, it wants my password. I've tried the root as well as the dsl password, but that's not it. Is this the correct way to install software? Posted by AwPhuch on April 21 2006,06:09

I could be mistaken, but my understanding of Linux/Virus situation is. Due to the nature of viruses, linux can't be infected, yet if there is a virus present on your box, you could possibly infect windoze boxes. But Linux can be infected with worms and rootkits.
Yea I thought the title was neat to. But couldn't imagen what Billy would leave in my box after I throw his ass out! Posted by AwPhuch on April 21 2006,21:48

Regarding the installation of Limewire....< http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki....ensions > Limewire is under the Net category of the MyDSL Repository. Good luck. Posted by SocomRod on April 22 2006,13:40
ahh. that's why I couldn't find anything. I am still using windows-speak.Thanks very much for the link. That was exactly what I was looking for. It won't be long now. Every time I boot up I learn something new and gain more functionality from dsl. If you liked the image that the title of this thread conjures up, just wait until you see the unauthorized biography of bill gates that I am writing. It's titled "Mein Comp". jk Thanks so much for all the help. I am looking forward to the day when I can assist noobs too. |
