Why do certain apps require a middle mouse button ?

fluxbox tabs are useless without it and earlier this weekend I spent two hours typing up the output from ruby profiling because aterm needs a middle mouse button to copy text...:(

the middle button has not been around for that long and only 1 of my 4 computers has one.

It just seems so inconsistent with standard linux procedure, to make such functionality unaccessible because a mouse only has two buttons...

could a shift + right click be programmed in as an alternative or is there some way to configure X to use a combination to generate a middle mouse click?

Dosen't clicking the left and right mouse button at the same time symulate a middle click? A mouse is cheap these days, why not just get a 3 button mouse and leave that frustration behind.

Not in my experience, even after reconfiguring xsetup.sh

Works fine for me. The appropriate clause in .xserverc for me is:
-2button -mouse /dev/psaux

The middle mouse button/wheel is more than worth paying a few bucks for a newer mouse, and this coming from a guy that never buys anything =o)

I got two "scrollwheel" mice that work fine with DSL.

One is an A4TECH $4.95 special.

The other is a very nice Logitech OPTICAL scrollmouse from CompUSA $20 with a $20 rebate = free

I use dsl on laptops with no upgrade option :/

I'll try roberts solution, I knew there would have to be someway around it :)
