I know that a lot of linux distributions will not allow a virual disk installation, but it would be nice if I could get some help triing to install DSL into VMware.

If anyone can help me or have any ideas, please email me..

dsl-2.4-vmx.zip is a DSL virtual machine already built to run in VMware

It is more difficult to get it to work, if you choose scsi for your virtual disk. Also after the first boot a Virt machine will not boot from a cdrom unless you change the setting in the bios(Of The VM).

With IDE, typical redhat type and I do not typically run a swap file. Make your Virt disk about 250 megs (change to what you want)and allocate all the space (makes it faster).
Then when installing DSL under VMware, the best way I have found is to use an iso image and mount it as your cdrom. When it boots up. Do a typical hard drive install and you are finished.

Screen resolution is best left at the default, until vmtools are installed.

FYI, installing vmware tools can be tricky, review there howto for a "manual" install of vmware tools.

Here is the outcome of a slightly different route to get a DSL virtual machine .
To run DSL and WinXP etc concurrently with minimum hazzle just:
(i) install the free VMWare player on Windows host
(ii) unzip a 50MB, dsl.zip ,( < http://marthomacentre.org.uk/dsl.zip > )to a folder and open the included 'dsl.vmx' file . The 150MB virtual disk.dsl.vmdk' can dynamically,if needed,  grow to 10GB!

The root password is set to 'marthoma' -  after the forthcoming 2007 Golden Jubilee of Mar Thoma Church, UK.

I have dsl-2.4-vmx up and running in my WinXP.  Looks fantastic, runs fast enough, but I don't have any sound.  How do I get sound to work on a virtual machine?  The ethernet card came up automatically and I guess I expected the same for the sound card, which is already working on the WinXP host.

Disregard my last post:  I figured out how to change the .vmx file.  Sound works now!
