I tried looking for a FAQ or Introduction to DSL but no luck. Here are a few questions.

1. I am trying to download DSL and went to one of the FTP sites.
I assume the /current/ folder contains latest stable version. The 1-readme_first.txt file doesn't tell us what bootfloppy-usb.img or bootfloppy.img are used for.

2. Is there a magical way to put the ISO onto a USB disk? Or can we just copy the files?

3. Is Frugal install meaning that the ISO actually sits on a HD and the PC boots up from that?

4. What is DSL-N?

Hi,
all these questions have an answer in the forum (search the forum since the beginning with appropriate key words and boolean separators):

1. these are images in order for you to boot DSL with the help of a floppy disc if your computer doesn't boot from cd;
2. use dsl-embedded.zip in order to decompress it on your usb pendrive; use the utility on the DSL-Live Cd in order to install dsl on your pendrive (mydsl-->tool); make sure that your computer boot off of the pendrive (usb-zip or usb-hdd in your bios must be present);
3. yes

Question 4.  DSL-N is called the "big brother" of dsl.  It has been put together without the 50MB limit being imposed.  It uses the 2.6 kernel.  If size is not important, give it a try!

I downloaded dsl-embedded.zip and ran the windows.sh file. I went to the Apps, Tools, Install onto USB HD. It tells me whether USB drive is mounted? Hmm, does DSL do auto detect new devices connected? Guess not. How do I mount my USB drive?

Also, I notice a Knoppix folder. Is DSL based off Knoppix?

1. you have to unpack to content of the .zip arch. of dsl-embedded on your usb-drive, and not to install it with the dsl utility you found in the CD; this utility is there for people wanted to install the content of DSL-Live CD on a usb-pendrive;
2. yes, DSL recognizes a lot of USB-pendrive; and yes, you have to mount your pendrive with the DSL mount tool (look for it in the CD);
3. yes, DSL base is knoppix (3.3 I guess); DSL-N is knoppix 3.9, and should be knoppix 5 in the future (I guess, too).

To be specific,

DSL current (version 3.01) is based from the KNOPPIX 3.4 5-17-2004 release.
