With a few simple boot command cheats you can!

If you know the machine isnt using scsi, or AGP, or UDMA or whatnot..you can disable those...plus by pointing the search to the correct device it doesnt have to poll all the hardware looking for the bootimage..

You can get DSL to book in 15-20 seconds on some machines!

I have an overclocked 2.8 extreme (currently at 3.35ghz) that will boot stock DSL 2.3 from a hd in about 25 seconds about 3-5 seconds are spent looking for drives. This is power on to desktop.

DSL username "Fordi" once built a similar "DSL Accelerated" system using his own tools.

He booted the DSL.iso file from within a patched version of QEMU and documented all of the compressed ISO block reads.  Then he remastered the dsl.iso file to optimize it for bootup speed.

So it is possible.
