Hi,

Here are a couple of issues I noticed after trying out DSL 3.0 for the first time:

At the end of the boot up process Dillo is launched with - I suppose as in the past - a short introduction to DSL.  With DSL 3.0 however Dillo start but does not open any file.  A message at the bottom of Dillo says that dpid could not be started.  I tried starting it from the console and I got this:

AS DSL:

Code Sample
dpi_socket_dir.c:63: tst_dir: access : No such file or directory
- /tmp/dsl-r1b1bc/
debug_msg - init_sockdir: The socket directory /tmp/dsl-r1b1bc does not exist or is not a directory
dpi_socket_dir.c:85: mk_sockdir: a_Misc_mkdtemp :  - /tmp/dsl-l8ctg8
dpi_socket_dir.c:123: init_sockdir: mk_sockdir :  - Failed to create dpi socket directory
main.c:243: main: init_sockdir : Failed to create socket directory

AS ROOT:

Code Sample
dpi.c:61: a_Dpi_rd_dpi_socket_dir: access : No such file or directory
- /root/.dillo

Other problems I noticed included that the mount tool cannot be started and neither can the system stats.

I use DSL on a laptop and acpi is buggy.  It does correctly report the precentage of battery charge, but tormso erroneously says "AC" when my laptop is running on its battery.  When I run acpi from a terminal it does correctly report when the battery is charging, but it adds "charging at zero rate - will never fully charge".

That's it for now (I only had 10 minutes to try it out).

HTH & kind regards and many thanks for your fantastic work!

try using the cheat code > dsl legacy

or using the new version 3.0.1 were unionfs is not used.

i find most problems is because of unionfs and the way it combines the directories.

ok. thanks for the advice - I will try that!

Kind regards,

I tried doing this but ALL the problems encountered remained...

Do you think trying 3.0.1 will help?  (they posted that the sole difference between 3.0 and 3.0.1 was that the latter did not have unionfs by default...)

Try downloading and burning again. use cdr burn at 4x
Posted by vees on June 25 2006,15:06
i did. the same stuff happened. but when I tried 3.0.1 on my desktop the problem did not occur.

so something was changed between 2.4 and 3.0 and 3.0.1 which not related to unionfs which created the problem on my laptop.  Any idea as to what that might be?

it looks to me like your mixing with another system you have installed. try booting the cd with the cheatcode> dsl nohd(i think that's it, press F2 at start to check)

============ start debug info ============
libhd version 8.38 (ia32)
kernel version is 2.6

dsl does not have a 2.6 kernel.

Posted by vees on June 25 2006,21:13
oops, I shoud have been more clear...

I used the hwinfo available with Kanotix since my version of DSL did not have this application.  I gave it only to list the hardware on my laptop and not as an indication of what is detected with DSL.

That is why the kernel 2.6 shows up.

Sorry about that...

Does

dsl legacy acpi=off

work?

Posted by roberts on June 26 2006,04:24
What changed starting in 3.0 was the addition of ACPI power management modules. From your printout it appears that your computer does have and tries to use ACPI. So, do try the various ACPI=xxx   options. acpi=off, or acpi=force, etc.

Notice in the original post "Failed to create socket directory" under 3.0 and unionfs.

Notice that it does work with 3.0.1 and no unionfs.  It looks to me like there were file system issues as originally stated by kerry and the switch to no unionfs fixed the problem (hence socket directory could be created).

I have had no problems with my compaq armada 7800 and 3.0rc2 but I don't have acpi (actually I turned it off in the bios).  There may be an issue with the knoppix-autoconfig  making a change with acpi detection on your system that affects the file system and confuses unionfs at the start which shows up later.  It may not even be related to acpi but just unionfs or unionfs and something else.
