What's an OS Without Tools?Forum: User Feedback Topic: What's an OS Without Tools? started by: JBHoren Posted by JBHoren on June 27 2006,02:29
Shalom!OK, I installed DSL-3.0.1 on my Toshiba Satellite 2540cds -- AMD K6-II/333 with 96MB RAM (soon to be 160MB) and 4.3GB hard drive. Great! JWM is very close to my favorite FVWM95 window manager. All-in-all, some nice features. However... it ain't an OS without a compiler and tools!! I used apt-get to fetch and install gcc (v2.95, surprisingly; I'd expected v3.3). But after a painstaking configuration of the Linux 2.4.32 kernel, I couldn't compile it, because there's no !@#$% "make" command!!! OK, I'm smarter than the average bear, so another apt-get install, this time for the missing "make". BEEP... wrong answer. There's a conflict between the version of "chgrp" installed (v5.0) and that of the fileutils package which apt-get wants to install along with 'lil 'ol "make". Sheesh! Yah, so DSL is based on Knoppix v5... but apt-get doesn't go to any Knoppix repository to download its packages... it heads right for a Debian mirror. Any suggestions (besides making sure that I apply the Knoppix kernel patch before reconfiguring and compiling)? Perhaps I should just install Knoppix?? TIA! Posted by Zucca on June 27 2006,03:02
I didn't have any problems compiling other apps. I just installed gcc from MyDSL...
