my laptop has 8mb of ram.. running at 75 mhz.

i copied the cd onto hda1 and made a dsl bootdisk..  i also made a swap of 16mb at hda2.. but when i load up dsl, it says "creating directories and symlinks on ramdisk..."

then it says:

Out of Memory: Killed process XXX (ln). Terminated

before i added the swap, it would just stop here, but after i added the swap, it goes a bit farther then drops me into a "very limited shell"..

what is going on??

What is going on is that you don't have enough  RAM for DSL.  You can add RAM or try a smaller Distro.

The only distro with X that works with only 8 MB is Basic Linux 3.21 (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/baslinux/). As the name implies, it it very basic, with a simple windows manager, x-term, xclock and calc (and a few others).

You could also try Vector 1.8 or Grey Cat 3.0, but both of these requires optimisations to run ok with 8MB.
