I`m linux beginner, though I have already tried some linux distros. I never had time to get used to it, but now I decided to install dsl on an old computer, which I would like to make usable.

I chose frugal install, cause it seemed to best suit my needs. I kept an old win98 on hda1, hda2 is now for CD image, hda5 is ext2 disk for mydsl, data, etc. and hda6 is swap.
Everything works great, there were NO HARDWARE DETECTION PROBLEMS! It seemed almost unbelievable for someone, who grew up with widoz!

After installation of system, I decided to edit menu.lst to make my new OS boot with proper settings and here comes my problem.
I tried to edit that file as root and couldn`t save (it told me, that my file system is read-only). I tried to make it work in different ways. File permissions seems to be set up properly and in fstab it seems OK too. Any suggestions?

I tried to make it work whole afternoon without any progress. The only thing I found out is, that boot directory is not a real directory, but only some link to another directory... I don`t understand this..

Depending on where you installed grub...
you can look in /cdrom/boot/grub/menu.lst
or just mount whichever partition it is and edit it i.e. in /mnt/hdXx/boot/grub/menu.lst

These are some default places.

I managed to edit it. I first tried to edit menu.lst in /boot-it was definitly not the right place
