Is there any way to make DSL prompt, as a default, a log-on screen? It appears that if one loses their USB stick with DSL on it, that all your info is in jeopardy based on the standard setup of booting straight onto the desktop. If so, WOW DSL has something here, but otherwise a lot is at risk!

Here's the method I use:

Depending on your setup, you might also need to backup other files.

You can't keep your data safe using this method if your disk falls into the hands of an evil being.  The password can be ignored by booting with "dsl base norestore".  If you are concerned with people getting physical access to your disk, consider encryption.

Use boot option protect. This will encyrpt your backup and therefore protect your personal data.
