Considering migrating to Linux but with NO unix or system background, am worried it may just turn out to be an enormous and unsuccessful waste of time. DSL looks interesting, tried a Kanotix LiveCD (worked but don't know what to do next, other than browse). All the comments seem very technical. Is anyone else a complete newbie having any luck with this stuff ? My main incentive is the relative security apparantly offered by Linux systems but am not looking for a make work project. Thoughts?? Thanks.

3 years ago I came to Linux as a Windows user. I wanted to learn it for my non profit work. I'm not a technical person at all. Three years later there is no sign of Windows in my home. I've been using Linux for the past three months. Never coded anything since my forays with Basic on an old DOS machine ten years ago, and I've only used Windows XP for the past two. Now I can fix broken code, compile programs and all that snazzy stuff.Linux does take some work, but it really depends on what you want it for. If you're looking for a system to work similar to Windows then Ubuntu, Knoppix, Damn Small and a few others are all very easy to learn and use. The only reason I've had to do so much work is because of my wireless card. It works fine in DSL but is impossible to configure with any other distro. Posted by AndyMack on Oct. 22 2006,17:31
Im very very new to linux, have no experience whatsoever of unix or anything like it, just used windows cause it was there.Was interested in trying linux to see what it was like, i came across dsl and loved the fact that it was so small compared to 4 cd's from other distros. I still have xp on another partition while im learning about this....have no idea what im doing though lol, but im learning. Cant hurt to try while keeping your other os installed. stop kicking the tires and taker for a drive...dsl live cd rocks..I installed it on a pen drive and also did a classic hard disk install on an older computer.. I found it simple, fast, functional, and fun... make work is relative..if you have prepared and installed windows, linux is very similar..if you have a newer computer that boots usb..I found the install to usb pen menu item very easy to use.. dsl is perhaps the best linux for new users. not only due to size but also hardware recognition and ease of instalation.. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. |
