1)no drive,usb attach to the machine (thin client)
2)pxelinux.0, 3.31. dsl-3.1RC1
3)pxelinux.cfg/default,

noapic vga=788 root=/ BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix

now
it actually boots . but result in

cant find knoppix filesystem, sorry.
dropping you to a (very limited) shell.
press reset button to quit.

any help ? idea
or its impossible to boot this way

Interesting, is that ftp mounted as some hdX ?
Because DSL will only look on what it sees as locally attached media.

Is 50,490,597 KNOPPIX a directory with a 'knoppix' file in there?

Of course, you could always install to your usb drive instead.

knoppix is a file so ,
BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix

i have no idea to mount something get from tftp to hdx

Have you tried using 'toram' in the kernel parms?
