I was wondering if damn small linux could run PHP, mySQL, and apache web server to set up a web environment so that I could code for this website I am putting together. I am trying gentoo and not having much luck. If anyone could let me know that would help thanks.

There's a mydsl package for apache2+php, but I'm not sure about mysql - I think DSL comes with sqlite though.

I have heard some user have good results with XAMPP. It installs entirely under /opt and provide all that you are asking for. Google for their project.
