light version of dslForum: User Feedback Topic: light version of dsl started by: tuxtux Posted by tuxtux on Nov. 24 2006,23:18
why you do not create a more light version of dsl, without firefox,to save space?my old 486 cannot run firefox. why do not create also a text-version of dsl,to resume up my 386? barry kauler have created puppy onebone,a text version of puppy, but cannot contain a hard disk installer. dsl have a text-mode hard disk installer! If you want to remove embedded apps from DSL, have a look at the script mikshaw is working on there: < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....t=16023 >
DSL was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. (Quote from < http://damnsmalllinux.org/ >) Of course because DSL is GPLed you are free to build a text-version of DSL. Posted by tuxtux on Nov. 25 2006,17:49
i'm a intermediate user, but i'm not an expert, cannot create or build a text version of dsl myself you have info about freedos? www.freedos.org this project is for old pc...but i'm not have experienced with dos... Posted by Selim on Nov. 26 2006,09:06
Sorry, i don't know freedos But if i was looking for a distro for an old pc i will have a look at floppy-sized distros: < tomsrtbt > < Google's listing of floppy-sized Linux distros > < TinyApps.Org > Posted by MDG on Nov. 26 2006,17:43
Tuxtux, Have you tried Opera.uci - it works on my 166 MHz laptop. MDG Posted by Winter Knight on Nov. 28 2006,15:57
Have you tried booting with cheatcode "2"? That makes you boot into text mode. It doesn't make the CD smaller, but it saves a lot of RAM. Have you tried frugal or HDD installs? Those make DSL somewhat faster. You could also remaster DSL. Take out the apps you don't need. It isn't really that hard. There are step by step instructions somewhere in these forums. Written by meo. You could also follow the instructions on the Knoppix wiki. remastering will make you from an intermediate to a slightly more advanced intermediate. |
