Hello everybody, me again with my disturbing problems  :p !

I discovered Synaptic in DSL, a GREAT way to install AND uninstall apps, but... Is there any way to add icons or in some way add "custom menu's" to easily see what's installed or to start what's installed  (I know how to start with command, but I want to make some "graphical link")??? !?

I found the desktop-icons in /home/dsl/.xtdesktop but the problem is, if I start to make a new icon, I must calculate the next free "fixed" position, is'nt there any easy way to do this!?

BTW, wooow me like DSL very much now   !

You don't need to calculate X/Y positions.
If you are using automatic layout the icon will align properly.
If you are X/Y then put in anything and then afterwards select double click and drag the icon to the desired position. Using Synaptic or Debian is great for the traditional hard drive installations. For Frugal/Live CD is uses too much of the ramdisk.

It seems to be quite easy to add icons though (unless you want to remove icons and then fill the empty space :D ) !

But I tried to make an icon to the desktop, edited another one, changed the position to the next "available", but it does not show up, and I have double-checked everything!

The only thing I can see wrong is if the PNG-icon must be a specific size  :( !

Wow, worked perfectly, did'nt even have to enter the .xtdesktop folder, just using the icontool, tnx  :D !

Hum... I have this disturbing problem, everytime I leave the computer, not using it for a while, it goes "black" and when I press any key to resume it's back at the computer boot, anyone possibly knows how to solve this problem  !?

You might want to add this line to your /home/dsl/.xinitrc (not at the end and before the desktop is started) :

xset s off &

Here's more information about the xset command :

I continue on this topic!

I installed a new motherboard yesterday, replacing my old Celeron 400 with a  faster Celeron 700  :p !

Same config, connections etc but for the video card, replaced my Radeon 9250 pci  with a Radeon 9600 agp!

I re-installed DSL (same harddrive etc, but wanted to reinstall due to new hardware if something would fail ??? ) !

After hard drive installation finished and I booted from harddrive, the first thing I did was to install Synaptic!

BUT... I got some strange errors about could not install depending packages or something, and that it ignored it!

But now, everytime I try to start Synaptic it says:
"wget: server returned error 404: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found"
"touch: /var/tmp/synfail: No such file or directory"
"An error occured while trying to get apt downgrade" !

WHAAAT  :O !? This worked perfectly on the 400mhz board, and I am suprised that a mobo-change can cause this!

So, anyone has a sollution!? Without Synaptic I wont use DSL!

It's probably not your fault.  404 means the server doesn't have the file you requested. In this case, I think it's the synaptic debian package. Someone else had the same problem just the other day, and solved it by installing synaptic from a different server using apt-get.

It might be the ibiblio mydsl server again, though. That server suffers frequent problems.

In any case, Synaptic obviously didn't install properly.

martinalexander, see the Apt thread about 404 for your solution.

Well, this helped me for future usage, but not to get synaptic working again! Tried apt-get update, but gave the same error :0 !

This thread is sure gotten off topic, but

For Synaptic use synaptic.dsl in the net section of the repository
